What to Expect at Your First Visit

Patient being welcomed at a dental office front desk

Visiting a new dentist can feel like a lot, especially if it's been a while since your last checkup. Here's what a first visit usually looks like, so you know what to expect.

Before your visit

  • Bring your photo ID and dental insurance card, if you have one.
  • Have a list of any medications you take and any health conditions we should know about.
  • If you've had dental X-rays in the last year or two, ask your previous dentist to send them. It may save you from repeating them.
  • Plan to arrive a few minutes early to complete paperwork.

During your visit

We'll start by reviewing your health history and asking about any concerns, like sensitivity, pain, or something you'd like to change about your smile.

Next comes a thorough exam of your teeth, gums, and bite. We'll take X-rays if they're needed to see what's happening below the surface. Depending on your needs, your cleaning may happen at the same visit or be scheduled separately.

After your exam

Your dentist will explain what they found in plain language. If you need treatment, we'll walk you through your options, timing, and costs, and check what your insurance may cover. There's no pressure to decide on the spot.

Feeling nervous?

You're not alone. Let us know if dental visits make you anxious. We'll go at your pace, explain each step before we do it, and you can ask for a break at any time.
