Inlays and Onlays in Catonsville, MD

When damage is too large for a filling but doesn't require a full crown, an inlay or onlay is a conservative middle option. We offer inlays and onlays at our Catonsville office.

What's the difference?

An inlay fits within the chewing surface of a tooth, between its cusps. An onlay also covers one or more of the cusps. Both are custom made to fit your tooth precisely.

When they're recommended

  • A cavity or old filling that's too large for a new filling
  • A tooth with a damaged cusp
  • When you'd like to keep more of your natural tooth than a crown allows

What to expect

  1. We numb the tooth, remove decay or the old filling, and take impressions.
  2. A temporary protects the tooth while a lab makes your inlay or onlay.
  3. At the second visit, we check the fit and bond it in place.

Benefits

  • Preserves more natural tooth structure than a crown
  • Strong and long-lasting
  • Tooth-colored for a natural look

Frequently asked questions

Is an inlay better than a filling?

For larger areas of damage, an inlay can be stronger and longer-lasting than a large filling. Your dentist will recommend what fits your tooth.

Is an onlay the same as a crown?

No. An onlay covers part of the tooth, while a crown covers all of it, so an onlay keeps more of your natural tooth.

How long do inlays and onlays last?

With good care and regular checkups, they often last many years.

Does the procedure hurt?

The tooth is numbed, so most patients are comfortable throughout.
