Common dental emergencies
- Severe or lasting toothache
- A broken, chipped, or cracked tooth
- A knocked-out or loose tooth
- A lost filling or crown
- Swelling or a painful bump on the gums
- A broken denture
What to do before your visit
- Knocked-out adult tooth: pick it up by the top, not the root, rinse it gently, and try to place it back in the socket. If you can't, keep it in milk and get to a dentist as quickly as possible.
- Chipped or broken tooth: save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling.
- Toothache: rinse with warm water and floss gently to remove anything caught between teeth. An over-the-counter pain reliever, taken as directed, can help until you're seen.
- Lost crown: keep the crown and bring it with you.
When to go to the emergency room
Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if you have facial swelling with a fever, trouble breathing or swallowing, bleeding that won't stop, or a possible jaw injury after an accident.
Office hours
We're open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM. If a dental problem happens when we're closed and it's severe, use urgent care or the emergency room, then call us the next business day.
Frequently asked questions
Can I be seen the same day for a dental emergency?
Call us as early as you can during office hours. We do our best to see patients with dental emergencies quickly.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Severe pain, a broken or knocked-out tooth, swelling, or a lost crown or filling are all reasons to call. If you're unsure, call and we'll help you decide.
Should I go to the ER for a toothache?
Go to the ER if you have facial swelling with a fever or trouble breathing or swallowing. For most toothaches, a dentist can treat the cause.
What should I do if a tooth is knocked out?
Hold it by the top, rinse it gently, and try to put it back in place, or keep it in milk. Getting to a dentist quickly gives the tooth the best chance.
