Does Dental Insurance Cover Crowns?

If your dentist recommends a crown, one of the first questions is usually what it will cost after insurance. Every plan is different, but most work in similar ways.

Crowns are often covered in part

Many PPO plans cover part of the cost of a crown when it’s needed to restore a damaged tooth. Plans usually group crowns with other larger treatments, so your share is typically higher than for cleanings and checkups.

What affects your cost

  • Your deductible: the amount you pay before coverage begins
  • Your annual maximum: the most your plan pays in a year
  • Waiting periods: some plans don’t cover larger treatments for the first months of coverage
  • Replacement limits: plans often limit how often they’ll pay for a new crown on the same tooth
  • Whether the crown is needed for your tooth’s health, or done mainly for appearance

How to know your cost before treatment

Ask us for a pretreatment estimate. We can send your treatment plan to your insurance company before your visit, so you know what your plan expects to pay and what your share will be.

Making the most of your benefits

Annual maximums usually reset each year. If you need more than one large treatment, we can help you plan the timing to make the best use of your benefits, without delaying care you need.
