How Often Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?
For most patients, a checkup and professional cleaning every six months keeps teeth and gums healthy. Your dentist may recommend a different schedule based on your needs.
Why every six months?
Plaque that isn’t removed hardens into tartar, which brushing and flossing can’t remove. Regular cleanings remove it before it leads to gum disease, and checkups catch cavities while they’re small and easier to treat.
When you may need cleanings more often
- A history of gum disease
- A tendency to build up tartar quickly
- Health conditions that affect your gums
- Braces or other appliances that make cleaning harder
What happens at a cleaning
Your hygienist removes plaque and tartar above and just below the gumline, polishes your teeth, and flosses between them. Your dentist then checks your teeth, gums, and mouth, and takes X-rays when they’re needed.
Does insurance cover it?
Many PPO plans cover preventive visits, often twice a year. Please check with your insurance company to confirm your benefits.
